Although I am not supposed to make boards for this project, I feel that it needs to have some. Purely because I spent a lot of time designing the layout and building up the content. Overall I am pretty pleased with the final outcomes.

Visual Resistance - Final Product Photographs

As this brief was one of the only strongly design related projects, I thought I would design some boards for the publication. Although I am an illustrator, I do enjoy graphic design also and particularly book making. Although time consuming it is something I want to carry on alongside. Anyway here are the project shots, which in my eyes effectively showcase the elements of the publication which I think are the strongest.

Design Context Publication: Product Photographs (Sort of)

Took a few photographs of my final design context publication in the 'cube' photo booth thing that dwells around studio 2. Taking higher quality photographs of my work has massively increased my confidence as a designer and illustrator. Especially with this project as it took me a week to put together and produce, and to be honest I feel I made something pretty damn cool.

Design Context Publication: Finals / Packaging

The final books printed with added hand-made packaging. I chose to design packaging without any initial nets of sketches, as I wanted to see how I could create something instantly relating to how I draw. Again this relates to the whole DIY punk thing, something I try to incorporate through a number of my projects as I find it important to craft and make, rather than sit and stare. Next stop product photographs as I want to create boards for this project as alongside my illustrative practice it also showcases a synthesis of book making and editorial layout.

Design Context Publication: Final Mocks

Final mocks of the four series context publication. Overall I am pretty happy with the visual consistency and the quality of the content I have included. As a set I feel that these represent myself as a designer and illustrator effectively and professionally.

Design Context : Publication, Further Development

Further layout development and ordering of the publication. Although one major concern at this point is the binding of the book, as there are definitely way to many pages for it to be bound at one side. To counter-act this I am going to consider splitting the chapters up into singular publications as this will allow easier production and binding once they have been finished.

Los Angeles Ink Stains

This is a pretty random comic book I picked up a while back. Lost Angeles Ink Stains, although I do not know much about the author / artists who have created the publication, but instantly the style of design direction draws me in. Black & white with an illusive mess of a layout, each page being carefully hand-drawn, or combined with digital methods of design. It's always nice to see people making what they want to make. No restriction but their own.

EMEK: Collected works of AaarghT

Emek is probably one of the most respected poster artists in the world, his work extends through numerous bands, musicians and solo artists. Over his years of practice, this book has collated a mass of his collected works and created one of the most influential books to my own practice. What intrigues me the most about his work is his process, as most of his screen prints have been hand created way before the art of digitally rendering. Master craftsmen indeed.

American Hardcore

American Hardcore by Steve Blush is probably one of my favourite books from all time. Linking back to my dissertation, this book was the driving force to my research studies and further understanding within the hardcore subculture. The layout is something that also intrigues me as the type expands across the entire page, with images that have been 'text wrapped'. This in my eyes relates aesthetically to a traditional punk zine.

Design Context - Poster / Publication

Printed out the posters and added the mock publication to the form a mini range. Already I am pretty proud with how it has turned out, and will continue to build on this project. The grey stock seems to work well alongside re and black, so I am going to use this set as the basis of the overall aesthetic.

Design Context - Possible Poster Design

Made some poster designs including some of my pattern work I have created over the module. The title will be over layered on top of the imagery to tie in effectively with the design work and range.

Design Context - Quick Print Mocks

Mad a couple of quick printed mock-ups of the publication and how the layout would look in reality. Already I know this is going to look pretty effective once I have created the entire layout and content of the publication.

Design Context - Publication Development

Began to start designing my context publication straight on the the computer. Quite quickly I have began to set out the overall aesthetics of the book. Keeping the colour scheme of black / white / red to tie in with the context effectively. This is not going to change as I cannot spend anymore time on 'thinking' about how it will be put together. Also I am going to include some of my own design work as some of the briefs I have done this year relate to the context and culture I revolve myself around.

 

Design Context - Colorplan Stock

Colorplan stock arrived. I have thought about using this for my design context publication although I'm unsure if the purple will tie in with the design work. Instead I might save it for my end of year show to use as screen prints. Not too sure as of yet.

Thought about creating my own type for the cover, or even a possible poster design to aid in the design of my context publication. Keeping it red and black as it fits in with punk / hardcore.

Concept boards for my design context publication and where I am going to take it. Basically making into a defined punk zine with a nicer layout.

Design Context - Quick Type Samples

Quick type samples for the name of the publication, as I am going to use a blackletter typeface as the theme of the book. At the moment Old English Text is my favourite and probably going to be the choice throughout the brief.

Design Context - Publication Development / Planning

Spent some time trying to get my head around the context publication and began to plan out how it is going to look as a visual product. The layout is going to be extremely bold and contain a lot of blackletter type, with one colour images. Keeping it punk and focussing on relating it to myself as a creative.
